Mark Plantery was born and raised in Thorold, Ontario, and has an extensive background in hockey. Plantery played three years of Junior "A" in the Ontario Hockey League playing for the Hamilton Fincups and the Windsor Spitfires and was a member of Team Canada, winning a silver medal in the 1976 World Junior Championships. He played seven years of professional hockey totaling 398 games (Sherbrooke Jets, AHL; Tulsa Oilers, CHL; Flint Generals, IHL; Val Gardena, Italy) including 26 games in the NHL with the Winnipeg Jets.

Plantery began coaching youth hockey in 1999 for the Cyclones Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) based in Geneva, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago. He was elected President of the CAHA 2010-2022 and became a member of the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois (AHAI) Player Development Committee in 2011. He is involved in evaluating the best bantam and midget players in the state to advance to the Central District Player Development Camp. Also, in 2013, he was invited to the Central District Development Camp in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, evaluating and ranking players for advancement to the National Development Camp in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Mark has been the Director of Hockey for DYHA since May 2022.
